Runcorn band The Fireflys to play at BB’s Bar in WidnesFeb 24 2011by Mark Smith, Runcorn and Widnes Weekly News

IT isn’t often that a band who have topped the likes of Kings of Leon, Oasis, and The Smiths take to the stage at a Widnes bar.

But on Friday, March 4, live music fans will be able to see an act who have done just that.

Runcorn band The Fireflys stormed to number 30 in the Amazon indie and alternative download charts in December with their debut album Better to Burn Out, putting them in front of some of the biggest names in music.

Now with their next album – entitled Cathedral for your Ashes – set for release, and a UK tour in the planning stages, the four-piece outfit take to the stage at BB’s Bar on Victoria Road next Friday, March 4, to give music fans a sneak peak at their new material.Frontman Lee Wylding said: “This is basically a one-off free gig so we can test out the new material on our fans and see what reactions we get from different songs.”

Once the gig is in the bag the band head to Ellesmere Port’s Whitby Studios for four weeks beginning in the middle of March to start cutting the album.

Lee said: “It’s coming out on the Canadia Records label and it hits stores in the UK on May 9.

“It follows overseas a week later in the USA, Canada, Japan and Australia.

“We’re also in the process of setting up a UK tour to promote the album with Dave Smith of Ravenheart Music.”

He added: “Our debut albums is still continuing to sell well into the thousands and we’re hoping the second album will do even better!”

RUNCORN band The Fireflys are celebrating after their debut album topped the likes of Kings of Leon, Oasis and The Smiths in the Amazon download chart.

The four piece act reached number 30 in the online company’s indie and alternative rankings with their album Better to Burn Out – almost a full year after its release.

The achievement caps a hugely successful year for the band.

In March they performed with Patrick Jones, brother of Nicky Wire from Manic Street Preachers. They played The Cavern in Liverpool twice over the summer and introduced new drummer Andrea Packer to the band in October.

Frontman Lee Wylding said: “The best thing is we’ve had very little management and label support.

“We did it the hard way by grafting and plugging away to death!”

The Fireflys are already lining up of gigs for next year and are to play The Citadel in St Helens in January followed by East Leeds Lions bikers’ rally at Easter.
